Nicki Minaj rarely needs direction, musically or sartorially.
For her new spread in ELLE magazine, the first lady of Young Money flaunted her au naturel beauty, posing in minimal makeup and killer designer threads à la Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen. But she also name-dropped a well-known songstress that she deemed a style icon.
“My favorite singer [as a girl] was Monica,” Minaj tells the fashion glossy. “Her clothes and her shoes always looked expensive, and I felt like I could never afford what she was wearing.”
Monica, whose style transformation has left a mark on many ladies throughout the years, is flattered by the salute. “It’s extremely humbling to be thought of and remembered by a woman and artist like Nicki because she has done some amazing things in her career thus far,” she tells Vixen. “It touched my heart that songs I sang meant something to her because when I sing, I sing for the people and the young women like me. Music saved my life, and I know Nicki can relate to the love and passion for the music.”
